Is it impossible not to be interviewed by fuckwits? I guess not if you’re Sonic Youth. Then again this interview wouldn’t be nearly half as entertaining without Lee Ranaldo calling out insults over the top of the ADD-riddled interviewer and Steve Shelley laughing in his face. And it wouldn’t be complete without Kim Gordon’s soul-crushing indifference and Thurston Moore’s ironic non-sequiturs. Fuck I love this band.
Charlotte Gainsbourg - IRM
This is the first single off Charlotte’s new album, produced and recorded by Beck, and even though I though Modern Guilt was a disappointment after the perfect rounding out of his last 15 years in music that was The Information, I love his shit as a producer, he even managed to turn Jamie Lidell into a half decent musician (with a bit of help from Chris Taylor and Feist). Seriously though, Thurston Moore’s new album is like creamy acoustic gold and you can just hear the tiny imprints of Beck’s producing here and there (like the sudden off-key synth chord out of key and context at the end of Illuminine). Where the difference lies here is that Charlotte Gainsbourg is incredibly self-conscious, self-doubting and quiet and Beck has done an amazing job (reminiscent of Richard Russell’s Production of Gil Scott-Heron’s last album before he died recently) bringing her out of her comfort zone and into this crazy glitch-pop-ballad-blues mangling of styles that Beck is known for.

This is a fucked up lo-fi space fuzz new album from a French duo, signed to a label in Brisbane of all places. The rest of the album follows more or less the same grain with occasional drum machine beats and a bit more energy, overall they achieve a disdainful expression of not giving a fuck and being French, which everyone knows is the best thing.
Actress by Pierre Debusschere
The (I would say) incredibly overhyped ‘teaser’ for either a film made by a guy about Actress (this producer who makes Caribou/Tycho-esque beats) or his album? Unclear because being mysterious is everything these days. This being said, you can stream his album about the interwebs, though I don’t have a link, and it’s a welcome addition to my library of weird electronica and chillwave.
